Hi, Jenny! Glad to see the insect advocate is still going strong. I hope you also continue to post on hatrack, so people there get the benefit of your knowledge.
I want to warn you about Lyme disease. My son got bitten, we assume, at some point from age 7 to now. He never got a bulls-eye rash or any other indication that he had gotten it, so he missed the early easy treatment options. Now the little borrelia are lodged deep in his central nervous system and causing him all sorts of problems. We know of people who have been paralyzed by it. My son is disabled with various arthritic complications as well as brain problems like constant nightmares, sleep paralysis, narcolepsy, attention deficits, inability to concentrate, short term memory loss, etc. etc. It can progress to rage and dementia, much like untreated syphilis, of which it is a cousin.
Please, please, please protect yourself from this horrible disease! It's much more widespread than the CDC recognizes, due to their extremely limited definition of who counts as a Lyme case. Even so, their map shows it all over the country.
I know you love bugs but they (through the diseases they carry) can also be deadly, or (as in my son's case) cause years of terrible suffering.
Tatiana, I am so sorry to hear that your son was hurt by Lyme disease. I hope everyone will take sensible precautions when going out into the wild. There are dangers everywhere you go, and it is wise to be aware of them. It is my fervent hope that a cure will be discovered to help your son. And I'll be reminding my kids to put on the bug spray this summer.
Lyn/Synesthesia...your big wasp friend will be the subject of my next post! She's gorgeous, but I can certainly see why you'd rather not get too close to her.
Of course, Lyme disease comes from a tick bite, and ticks aren't insects, they're arachnids. Eight legs not six. Still, mosquitos these days have West Nile fever and other really scary stuff too. I don't spend time lying around in fields anymore, or even sitting out on my deck, because I take those sorts of illnesses a lot more seriously than I did.

I also love moths, especially giant silkmoths, grasshoppers, fireflies, dragonflies, damselflies, ants. Mostly stuff that doesn't sting or bite hard.
